HEALTHY BREATHING For HYPOCAPNIA SYNDROMES (Space Available)
An Educational, Interactive and Immediately Applicable ONE-DAY Course

2010-11-21
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
TORONTO, ON

Instructor: Arne Heayn, RPT
Arne Heayn, BSc(PT) Queen's University ’71, has recently retired after 40 years of active physical therapy practice. He is certified in The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education, Buteyko Eucapnic Breath Re-Training, and Sounder Sleep. These and other complementary therapies were incorporated into his practice.

Now he passes on his evidence-informed clinical experience and knowledge to a wider audience through Body-Help Wellness Education, teaching self-help classes to individuals and guiding practitioners to a more holistic approach.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

    What is Hypocapnia?

It is a drop in arterial CO2 levels below 35mmHg. Hypocapnia is often a result of "over-breathing" when ventilation exceeds the metabolic needs.

Epidemiological studies show that respiratory problems are strongly associated with back pain. Other papers discuss the role of dysfunctional breathing mechanics in patients with neck pain.

This one-day course will teach clinicians the basic techniques to effectively help a subgroup of often difficult to manage patients suffering from various conditions clinically linked to chronic hyperventilation such as: hyperalgesia, persistent neural sensitization, sweaty or tingling hands and feet, migraines, headaches, dizziness, non-specific abdominal pain, anxiety, sleep apnea and even asthma.

"...unrecognized hypocapnia is common in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, and nonspecific dizziness.
Reference: Naschitz JE, et al Patterns of hypocapnia on tilt in patients with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, nonspecific dizziness, and neurally mediated syncope. Am J Med Sci. 2006 Jun;331(6):295-303.

"The Buteyko (Reduced) Breathing Technique group exhibited a reduction in inhaled steroid use of 50% and beta2-agonist use of 85% at six months from baseline."
Reference: McHugh et al Buteyko Breathing Technique for asthma: an effective intervention. N Z Med J. 2003 Dec 12;116(1187):U710.
